Alternate Versions The movie has two endings; one for the theatrical release, and an alternate version included in the movie's DVD.

In the first, after a brief dialogue with Telly, the man creates an illusion of Sam which Telly chases through the hangar, and then confronts her again.

He reveals that the purpose of the experiment is not to investigate the children, but rather the bond that exists between a parent and child, and that he believes it can be broken.

He admits, however, that the experiment has so far produced no positive results with regards to Telly, and that it will fail soon if she doesn't forget, and he will be responsible for that failure.

However, despite him revealing himself as an alien and almost succeeding by stealing the memory of Sam's birth, Telly can still remember her son, and he is whisked away by an unseen force, presumably to face the consequences of failure.

Reality is restored to normal, and Telly is the only one who can remember the events that transpired.

The alternate version is very similar, except that Telly is faced with a facsimile of Sam's room. She tries to force her way in, but cannot reach Sam.

The alien scientist tries to convince her to forget Sam, but fails. He then accepts that the experiment has failed, and explains that she will be the only one who remembers what transpired there.

October 1, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews Nov 06, Full of mystery and intrigue, The Forgotten is a suspenseful psychological thriller that kind of goes off the rails.

The story follows a grieving mother who lost her son in a plane crash, but soon all evidence of her son's existence is erased, leaving her to question her sanity and desperate to prove that he was real.

Julianne Moore gives a fairly good performance, as does Gary Sinise. Additionally, the storytelling does an impressive job at building up the mystery of the missing child.

But the ending is completely ridiculous and comes out of nowhere. A rather pointless and inane film, The Forgotten fails to payoff its mystery and insults the audience with nonsensical tripe.

Dann M Super Reviewer. Oct 08, The Forgotten is a well-made and well-acted film that requires you to either disengage your brain or play along.

If you can then it is an enjoyable film, in spite of an unrealistic plot. Julianne Moore great to watch, as always, and there are a few nice dramatic effects.

We need the explanations in order to throughly understand the separatists point of view. The characters are engaging if not totally likable.

Each are heavily flawed but realistic. The title could have been chosen with a bit more relevance to the story-however any title with the word Daughter seems to be on trend with publishers right now.

There were actually two daughters of equal importance in the story and I would argue they were not forgotten. The tempo and pace of the novel is appropriate and the characters each have their own unique set of characteristics.

They were well drawn. The story had a great ending and left the reader with answers. I would highly recommend this novel both to individuals and book clubs.

There is plenty for book clubs to discuss and I believe my book clubs would enjoy the story. Nov 15, Dawnny rated it it was amazing.

She is an orphan who gets involved with a coalition for justice and reparations for the orphans. The orphans were placed into mental hospitals.

Both Veronique and Elodie become friends. I loved The Home For Unwanted Girls and this did not disappoint.

Having a grandmother who lived in an orphanage and a grandfather who came to this country an orphan I really felt this story.

I learned a great deal reading this. This is a perfect book club book. A haunting story based on true events.

To be honest, I know very little about Canadian history, so this book opened my eyes to some things that I had no idea about.

I didn't know that there was a movement for Quebec's independence, and I didn't know about the orphans being put in mental institutions or the church's involvement in that.

So that's two events in history that I now want to research and learn more about. The Forgotten Daughter is a character driven, and well written novel tha Thank you Harper Paperbacks for the gifted copy.

The Forgotten Daughter is a character driven, and well written novel that follows two women through both of these events. There were parts that were slow but it kept picking back up and kept my attention.

Veronique is the daughter of a famous radical separatist who spent most of her childhood in jail for kidnapping and murder of a prominent politician in She meets and begins a passionate relationship with older journalist James Phenix, who despite his roots as a working-class French Canadian, writes for an English-speaking newspaper along with not supporting the separation cause.

His older sister, Elodie Phenix, is a Duplessis orphan. This book was truly incredible. First of all, as an American, I had no idea about the history that was in this book.

Similarly, I had to educate myself about the crimes against the orphans as well. Damn the Catholic Church for the continuation of abuse against children.

This is a must read for anyone looking to educate yourself about Canadian history, especially us Americans. Nov 13, Kristin Always With a Book rated it it was amazing Shelves: read-in , audio-book , review-book , arc , library-book.

Thank you Harper Perennial for the gifted copy. This latest book from Joanna Goodman is a follow-up to The Home for Unwanted Girls, and I am glad that I found that out before reading this one.

While it absolutely can be read as a stand-alone as the author does provide enough detail to make sense, I felt that I had a fuller picture of what really transpired prior to what happened before the events of this book.

This book once again explores a time and place in history that I am not familiar with - Thank you Harper Perennial for the gifted copy.

This book once again explores a time and place in history that I am not familiar with - that of Canadian history, specifically in Quebec, in the s and s.

While it wasn't that long ago, it was not something I learned about or even remember reading about in the papers here in NY.

Again, this is why I love reading historical fiction I always walk away having learned something new. And, having read this during a time when our own country was in a bit of an upheaval due to our own elections was quite interesting.

I loved how the story moved back and forth in time, giving us both Elodie's story later in her life as she continued to come to terms with what she had endured in her early years and tried to find justice for herself and the other orphans as well as Veronique's story.

At first, I was confused by how her story would be so integral to the overall plot, but as the story unwound, it becomes evident and I could not get enough.

I was equally invested in both women's lives and found them quite compelling. Once again, Joanna Goodman gives us a story that while fictional is woven with historical facts.

Again, much like the previous book, there are times that this book will shock you and break you heart, but it's also an important read. We need to know what happened if we are to learn from history and not make the same mistakes again.

I'm so glad I discovered these books and would recommend both of them to anyone who loves historical fiction.

Audio thoughts: This is the first time I've listened to Esther Thibault but I thought she did a great job with this audiobook.

Her pacing and intonation was spot on and I thought she was able to infuse just the right amount of emotion into her voice as needed. Dec 17, Wendy G rated it liked it Shelves: audiobook , historical-fiction , book-club , coming-of-age , fiction , family.

When I started listening to this story, thoughts of 'The Home for Unwanted Girls', the author's last book, came back to me and I had to look up the description.

I am baffled by the fact that no where in this book's description does it say it is a sequel to her other book. While it's a stand alone book for sure, the reader should be aware that it is definitely a sequel to the above mentioned book.

This story revolves around another family in the Quebec area but also involves Maggie and Gabriel fr When I started listening to this story, thoughts of 'The Home for Unwanted Girls', the author's last book, came back to me and I had to look up the description.

This story revolves around another family in the Quebec area but also involves Maggie and Gabriel from the first book and continues on with their daughter, Elodie, who was a Duplessis orphan, one of thousands of children who were deemed mentally incompetent and thrown into mental hospitals.

So, where 'Home' is the story about Elodie and her childhood, this story is about a grown-up Elodie, her daughter, and her relationship with her birth mother, Maggie, and Maggie's family.
